New free knitting pattern & a favor to ask

I had fun using up some wool scraps,

making tiny felted vessels inspired by Laura's Winter Rainbow series of photographs.

They're so simple and fun to make (less than 30 minutes of knitting time!) and useful to have around.

The main reason I made them however, was to gather information about how YOU like to hand-felt. As you may know, I'm currently working on a book for STC Craft full of knitting patterns for slippers, many of them knitted and felted. Most of the felting I do is by hand, and that's the technique I will be including in the book. Before I write more about that however, I'd like to get more information about your experiences with hand felting.

SO. I have a favor to ask. I'm hoping you'll knit up one of these vessels and then felt the pieces by hand following my directions in the pattern. Then fill out a survey that's right here to let me know how the felting process went for you. ETA: Free to use any yarn comparable to the one I used, surely you have some feltable worsted weight yarn around.

When you send me your completed survey, you'll be entered to win a set of Color Stripe Vessels made by yours truly along with a $50.00 gift certificate to the online yarn shop Webs.

Recap:

1. Get the pattern and knit a Color Stripe Vessel. Here's the pdf.

2. Hand felt the vessel.

3. Complete the survey by February 20, 2012.

4. Be entered to win a $50.00 gift certificate to Webs and a completed set of Color Stripe Vessels.

Please help me spread the word, I'm looking forward to hearing about your felting exploits!

*Just FYI, Webs isn't sponsoring this project. Webs doesn't even know who I am other than being one of their customers. I just love shopping there and thought you probably do too.

Oh, those are lovely! And you're right... little bowls are *always* useful to have around. I'm going to go make one now :)

I found your pattern on Ravelry last night and dug my big needles out today. I just finished my first vessel and I love it! My fingers are all wrinkly but I'm excited to make a bunch of these cuties.

This was a great easy and quick pattern. I was able to complete it quickly even with my almost 4 year old and my 3 year old twins around. This was the first time I ever hand felted and was amazed at how easy it was. I can't wait to make more.

Wow thanks everyone! So glad to hear that you enjoyed the pattern. Thanks for your kind words. Don't forget to fill out the survey, I'd love to hear more about your experience, especially you first- time felters!

Just finished felting my vessel - it was so fun! The pattern worked up easily after I got started (I'm pretty klutzy at dpns) and I'm really pleased with the end result. Piece is drying, survey is filled out - now all I have to do is decide on what color to do next!
Thanks for such a fun pattern!!

So glad Laura! Thanks for completing the survey!

Shoot, I didn't find the pattern until AFTER the deadline, but I'm still going to try and do it.
This will be my first attempt at hand felting. (The accidental scarf I felted in the washing machine
doesn't count!) Thanks for the instructions and motivation!

congrats on making it on the daily knitter. they are so cute. i just wish my hands were not so sensitive. i can not use pure wool. is it possible to substitute another kind and weight of yarn and use smaller needles to reach the same beautiful goal? thanks

What a super vessel! I am just visiting now which is clearly after the deadline. I will be soon making one of these. Are you still interested in collecting the survey info?
