Star Garland free knitting pattern

Click here for the free knitting pattern for the Star Garland, a knitted and felted string of stars.

The stars are simple and chunky, and their bright colors are endearing and sunny. This simple garland makes me happy, I hope you make and enjoy a Star Garland too!

I am somewhat new to knitting (just under a year) but I'm trying to do this. I got all the way through step 27 and it looks great.

Now I'm to the part with the last point. On the right needle I have one stitch. On the left needle I have 5 stitches. The instructions say "pick up stitch next to point just completed..." - I haven't picked up stitches before but reading online and watching videos I "get" the concept (I think). BUT I'm confused.

1) Am I "picking" up with the left or right needle?
2) Where it says "on the inside of the star, knit 5, KFB [7 sts] - is that using the stitches on my left needle and my right needle? Or am I picking up stitches along the way? Or..??

Please help me out, if you can explain it at all I'd reallllly appreciate it!

Katie and Laura, I pulled off one of your flyer tabs at Berea Coffe and Tea advertising the knitting class. I am interested. Can you please send me more information? Thanks, Denise
