Maybe we should start a category for paper lanterns here on Duo. It seems we mention them often. I’ve assembled a tray full of paper lanterns made by me and others to brighten our dining room table.

(Hmmm. its tricky to get a satisfying photo of candlelight...)
I’ve got an idea to make a folded paper lantern using similar techniques and materials as the window stars, and Eli, my 5, wants to paper mache with tissue paper over a kerosene lantern chimney. (Sounds pretty, but seems to me like it might catch on fire -you know how the top of the chimney is so narrow…) Our goal is to have enough lanterns to be able to light suppers solely with candle power!

I can't believe I forgot to put the source for the little folded paper lanterns in my original post. You can find great step by step directions here. The bigger orange lantern is from the book Paper Illuminated on Amazon here. Glad so many of you liked this! Oh and the biggest green lantern is paper mache tissue paper, using a balloon for the form. Happy lantern making!

I have been looking for a tutorial or a little more information on the smaller lanterns and I am not having any luck finding anything. Is there a link or a book that would help me recreate them? I love them!
Hi Laura and Katie! This is Jamie Anticoli (Wood) from Portland. I'm friend's with Abby on facebook and found your site through there. I LOVE it! My husband and I are trying to live a "sustainable" lifestyle in southeastern PA and finding it hit or miss. Part of my effort is to buy things second hand and make them more personal with stiching. Thanks for sharing your ideas in this area. The indigo shirt with red leaves is gorgeous!
Love these! So calming and pretty!!!
These are beautiful!
